WHAT IS STICK JUMPING?
STICK JUMPING is operated thru "TRY SOMETHING NEW, INC." a 501(c)3 nonprofit health & fitness educational program. Olympic Gold Medalist & Hall of Famer Stacy Dragila and her Team bring Olympic sports into the classroom by transforming elite sports (such as pole vaulting) into a Standard-Aligned P.E. Curriculum.
Utilizing a tool as simple as a bamboo stick and something to jump over (a sand pit, a hula hoop), STICK JUMPING targets pre-high school youth in the development of physics/biomechanics principles, specifically, the transference of linear momentum utilizing a rigid lever to create rotational momentum sufficient to generate vertical lift and horizontal displacement. (In other words: We teach kids how to jump over and across stuff!!)
Introductory Classroom Activities include: (a) Puddle Jumping: Sticks used to jump over hula hoop “puddles” in a field (angular/rotational forces to travel over barriers); (b) Stick Balancing: Balance sticks using various parts of the body (fine motor skills); (c) Relay Stick Races: Groups of 2-4 kids/stick in shuttle races (learning to work within a group); (d) “Cliff” Jumping: Use a stick to jump off a 2-4’ platform (spatial awareness; overcoming fear).
In doing so, we inspire every child to Try Something New and we plant the seed in schoolchildren to aspire to seek out and explore healthy activities outside of school. By providing teachers with training, curriculum and equipment necessary for them to learn to teach the program and run with it (or 'jump' with it), we ensure that our initial investment continues to pay dividends in classrooms for years to come.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
Reach ‘em early;
Reach ‘em all;
Reach ‘em often!
